FindABoardSeat is a governance research service built on public SEC filings. This page explains what personal data we hold, why, how long we keep it, and how to see, correct or delete it.
If you request a report, subscribe or have an account
| What | Why, and on what basis | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Board Seat Radar request: name, email, LinkedIn URL, your answers about board experience, location, sectors, conflicts and timing | To build the report you asked for. Basis: steps taken at your request before a contract. | 12 months from your request, then deleted. Longer only if you buy an annual watch, for as long as it runs. |
| The CV or LinkedIn PDF you email us | The same. It's read only to build your report. | The same as your request. |
| Newsletter: your email address, and when and where you signed up | To send the newsletter you asked for. Basis: your consent. | Until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. |
| Account (existing invited users): name, email, sign-in provider, profile details you entered | To run your account. Basis: our contract with you. | Until you ask us to delete it. |
| Page views on public pages: the page, the referring page, your browser's user agent | To see which pages are read. Basis: our legitimate interest in running the site. | 13 months. We don't store your IP address; we keep a one-way code that changes every day, so visits can't be linked across days or back to you. |
We don't sell your data, share it with search firms, use it for advertising, or add it to the board database. The site sets no advertising or tracking cookies; the only cookie is the sign-in cookie for account holders.
Who handles it for us
We use a small number of service providers, each bound to use the data only to provide their service to us:
- Hetzner (Germany): hosts the website and its database.
- Cloudflare (USA): network delivery, email forwarding, and encrypted backups, kept for 30 days.
- Google and Microsoft (USA): sign-in for account holders, and the email we use to correspond with you.
- Stripe (USA): payments, if you buy. We never see your card details.
- Anthropic and OpenAI (USA): AI tools that may help us draft parts of your report, used under business terms that don't allow them to train their models on your data.
Some of these providers are in the United States. Transfers from the EU, UK and New Zealand rely on the providers' standard contractual clauses or the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict or object to how we use it, or to receive it in a portable format. You can withdraw consent to the newsletter at any time. Email [email protected] from the address you gave us. Deleted data leaves our backups within 30 days.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to your data protection authority: in the EU, the authority where you live; in the UK, the ICO; in New Zealand, the Privacy Commissioner. We'd appreciate the chance to fix it first.
If you're a director named in our data
Our board pages and reports describe the boards of US-listed public companies. The facts come from filings those companies make with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and publish on EDGAR: annual proxy statements (DEF 14A) and current reports (8-K).
- What we hold: what the filing says about you: your name, age, the year you joined the board, committees, whether the company counts you as independent, your director pay, the biography the company published, and appointments or departures it announced.
- Why: governance research. We show who sits on each board and when seats may open, for aspiring directors, the programs that prepare them, and the search firms that fill seats. Our basis is legitimate interest: the information is published under US law so investors and the public can see who governs a public company, and we use it for that same purpose.
- How long: as long as it's part of the public filing record. When a company files a new proxy, the board page shows the new board.
- Corrections: we extract this data automatically and sometimes get it wrong. If something about you is wrong, email [email protected] with the board page's link. We check it against the filing and fix it.
- Objections: you can object to our use of your data. We'll weigh your reasons against the public purpose of the filing and reply within one month.
